About Union County School District
Union County School District serves Union County, a small rural county in north-central Florida located between Gainesville and Jacksonville. The county seat is Lake Butler, and the district is among the smallest in Florida, with fewer than 2,500 students enrolled across a handful of school campuses. Union County is one of the most sparsely populated counties in Florida, characterized by pine forest, agriculture, and the nearby presence of Florida State Prison, the state’s primary maximum security correctional facility, which is a significant employer in the county.
Despite its small size, Union County has a strongly conservative political character and a close community culture. The school district operates Union County High School, Union County Middle School, and a small number of elementary schools. The limited size of the district means that decisions by the small school board can have an outsized proportional impact on the range of titles available to students.
Books in Schools
Union County School District recorded one of the highest per-capita rates of book restrictions in Florida during the 2022–24 period. As with other Florida districts, the passage of House Bill 1467 in March 2022 required the removal of all books not yet reviewed by a certified media specialist—a mandate that fell with particular force on small districts with limited staff resources to conduct rapid reviews.
The combination of the statewide review requirement and a receptive local school board produced a removal count that was extraordinary relative to the district’s enrollment size. Books covering LGBTQ+ themes, race, sexuality, and health topics were among those removed or restricted. Advocacy organizations tracking book bans in Florida flagged Union County’s proportionally high removal figures as an example of the law’s effect on students in small, rural communities with limited library resources to begin with.
