Overview
Cristina Moracho's "A Good Idea" follows Finley, whose bond with her best friend Betty has held steady across distance since Fin's family left their small Maine town for New York City in ninth grade. Letters, phone calls, and summers together kept the friendship intact, and by senior year the two had a plan: both would attend NYU and finally share an apartment as roommates.
That plan collapses when Betty vanishes. Her former boyfriend Calder initially confesses to drowning her, but the confession is later thrown out on legal grounds, and public opinion shifts quickly — many in town now assume he was pressured into a false admission and that Betty simply left of her own accord. Fin refuses to accept that explanation.
Convinced that her friend is dead and that the town's need for a tidy resolution has let the truth slip away, Fin comes back to Williston for a final summer before college. What follows is less a traditional mystery than a portrait of grief curdling into obsession, as Fin sets out to force a reckoning even if it costs her the people and the future she has left.
A Story About Grief, Loyalty, and the Limits of Justice
Moracho's novel sits at the intersection of coming-of-age fiction and psychological suspense, using the structure of a disappearance story to examine something less easily resolved: how a community absorbs a loss it would rather not fully investigate. Fin's fixation on proving what happened to Betty is inseparable from her fixation on preserving a friendship — and a version of home — that no longer exists in the way she remembers it.
The novel has drawn attention for its refusal to soften Fin's spiral. Her methods for pursuing the truth grow increasingly reckless, and the book does not present her as a conventional heroine so much as a young woman whose love for her friend curdles into something closer to self-destruction. That ambiguity — asking readers to sit with a protagonist whose grief makes her difficult rather than admirable — is part of what distinguishes it from more straightforward YA mysteries, and part of what has made it a point of contention for some readers and institutions.
Why A Good Idea Has Been Challenged
Much of the friction around "A Good Idea" centers on whether its subject matter belongs on shelves accessible to younger teens, rather than on any dispute about its literary merit. The novel's frank treatment of violence, including a killing and its aftermath, has led some reviewers and gatekeepers to argue it reads more appropriately as an upper-YA or crossover adult title than as general middle-grade or early-high-school fare.
Beyond the central act of violence, objections have also focused on the book's depiction of teenage sexuality, underage drinking and drug use, and coarse language, all of which appear as part of Fin's unraveling summer rather than as incidental detail. Critics of the book's presence in school libraries have described this combination as excessive for an audience of younger readers, while defenders note that the material reflects the emotional intensity of grief and the messy reality of adolescence rather than gratuitous content. In the districts and the state tracked in this catalog, the book has drawn a total of six recorded challenges on these grounds.
