About Lee County Schools

Lee County Schools is the public school system serving Lee County, Florida, on the Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida. The largest cities in the county are Cape Coral and Fort Myers, the county seat. With approximately 100,000 students, it is one of the larger school districts in Florida. The district has grown substantially over the past two decades as Southwest Florida became one of the most rapidly developing regions in the state, attracting retirees, families, and workers from across the country and abroad.

Lee County gained broad national attention in September 2022 when Hurricane Ian, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in recorded U.S. history, made landfall near Fort Myers Beach with catastrophic winds and storm surge. The storm caused widespread destruction across the district’s schools and communities, displacing tens of thousands of families. The recovery period coincided with the implementation of state book restriction requirements, creating an unusually difficult operational environment for schools and libraries.

Books in Schools

Lee County Schools implemented Florida’s House Bill 1467, signed in March 2022, which required all school library books to be reviewed by a certified media specialist before being made available to students. Like other large Florida districts, Lee County faced a significant review backlog, resulting in hundreds of titles being removed from circulation or otherwise restricted while awaiting approval.

Lee County also experienced targeted parent complaints about specific titles as part of coordinated advocacy efforts. Books addressing LGBTQ+ themes, sexual content, and racial identity were among those most frequently challenged. The district’s removal activity was documented by PEN America and placed it among Florida’s leading districts for book restrictions during the 2022–24 period. The combination of HB 1467 compliance withdrawals and formal challenge removals contributed to Lee County’s high count.
