Why Collateral Has Been Challenged
Some parents and administrators have argued that the book's frank depiction of a sexual relationship makes it unsuitable for the teenage readers who make up much of Hopkins's audience. See more ↓

Overview
Collateral tells the story of Ashley, a Northern California transplant pursuing graduate work at San Diego State, whose life outside the classroom has been shaped by poetry and music rather than anything resembling military culture. That changes when she falls for Cole, a Marine who defies the hard-edged image she expects of servicemen, instead courting her with tenderness and verse of his own.
What follows is a relationship stretched across five years and four combat deployments, during which Ashley must decide again and again whether to keep waiting through Cole's absences and the changes war works on him. When she meets a professor whose settled, present life offers a stark contrast to Cole's, she is forced to confront what she actually wants from a future together.
Hopkins renders all of this in her signature free-verse style, using the form's white space and fractured lines to mirror the uncertainty and waiting that define Ashley's experience.
A Home-Front View of War
Collateral is less a war novel than a novel about the people war leaves behind. By centering a civilian narrator, Hopkins shifts attention from combat itself to its ripple effects: the strain deployment cycles place on relationships, the way trauma travels home with soldiers, and the quieter sacrifices made by spouses and partners who reorganize their lives around someone else's service. The title's double meaning, applying "collateral damage" to intimate relationships rather than battlefield casualties, frames the book's central argument that war's costs extend well past the combat zone.
The novel also fits within Hopkins's broader body of work, which has consistently used verse narrative to explore difficult, adult-adjacent subject matter for a young adult and crossover readership. Where her earlier books often followed teenage protagonists through addiction or abuse, Collateral shows Hopkins applying the same unflinching, emotionally direct style to an adult relationship and the institutional weight of military life, broadening her thematic range while keeping her formal signature intact.
Why Collateral Has Been Challenged
Sexual content is the primary basis for objections to Collateral, with critics pointing to the novel's candid treatment of Ashley and Cole's physical relationship as inappropriate for younger or unprepared readers. Because the book is frequently shelved alongside Hopkins's other verse novels, which are popular with teenagers, some challengers have argued that its adult romantic and sexual content sits uneasily with that audience regardless of the book's literary merit or its serious treatment of military family life.
Additional objections have focused on the novel's language and its depiction of the psychological toll of war, including the strain deployment places on Cole's mental health and behavior. Taken together, these concerns have led to the book's removal or restriction in 3 states and 12 districts tracked in this catalog, even as defenders note that its portrayal of military relationships offers a perspective on service and sacrifice not commonly found in young adult or crossover fiction.
