Jennifer L. Armentrout was born on June 11, 1980, in Martinsburg, West Virginia. She studied psychology in college and worked in mental health before transitioning to a full-time writing career. She published her debut novel in 2011 and rose rapidly to bestseller status across both young adult and adult markets—an unusually broad crossover in commercial fiction. She has placed more than a dozen titles at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. In 2015, she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition that causes progressive vision loss; she has spoken openly about writing with low vision and the adaptations she has made to continue her career. She also writes adult romance under the pen name J. Lynn.

Armentrout is best known for two major series. The Lux series, beginning with Obsidian (2011), is a young adult paranormal romance featuring an alien race hiding on Earth and a human girl who discovers their secret. The Blood and Ash series, beginning with From Blood and Ash (2020) and published independently through Blue Box Press, is an adult high fantasy romance that became a massive BookTok phenomenon in the early 2020s and spent weeks atop bestseller charts. Her work is notable for its fast pacing, strong-willed female protagonists, and intensely romantic tension.
