Overview
Storm and Fury opens the Harbinger series with Trinity Marrow, an eighteen-year-old whose failing eyesight is paired with a far stranger gift: the ability to perceive and speak with the dead. That gift has kept her cloistered for most of her life within a compound run by the Wardens, shape-shifting protectors who stand between humanity and a hidden population of demons.
The narrow, guarded existence Trinity has accepted begins to fracture when Wardens from a different clan arrive bearing news of unexplained killings, deaths that seem to be targeting demons and Wardens alike. Among the newcomers is Zayne, whose presence unsettles her in ways she doesn't expect, and whose own secrets run just as deep as hers.
When the compound's defenses are breached and Trinity's closely held ability is exposed, she and Zayne are forced into an uneasy alliance. What follows is a fast-moving mix of romance and supernatural conflict, as the two are pulled toward a larger, world-altering confrontation neither fully understands yet.
An Entry Point Into Contemporary Romantasy
Armentrout, an established name in young adult and new adult fantasy, built Storm and Fury as the foundation of a trilogy that continues through Rage and Ruin and concludes with Grace and Glory. The book sits at the intersection of two genre currents that have surged in popularity over the past decade: urban fantasy grounded in angel-and-demon mythology, and the slow-burn romantic tension that has come to define the "romantasy" label now common in bookstores and library displays.
Part of the series' draw lies in its central pairing of a protagonist whose disability (encroaching blindness) is folded into the plot rather than treated as incidental, alongside a supernatural mystery that unfolds gradually across the trilogy. Its popularity with older teen and young adult readers has made it a frequent presence on library shelves and reading lists aimed at that audience, which in turn has placed it within the broader wave of romantasy titles drawing scrutiny in school and public library collections.
Why Storm and Fury Has Been Challenged
Objections to Storm and Fury center primarily on its romantic and sexual content, which reviewers and challengers have flagged as more explicit or mature than typical for its shelving in young adult sections. As with many titles in the romantasy category, concerns raised in challenges also point to depictions of violence tied to the book's demon-hunting premise, alongside broader arguments about the age-appropriateness of its themes for the readers who most often encounter it in school libraries. This title has been challenged or banned in 5 states and 28 districts tracked in this catalog, reflecting the wider pattern of scrutiny facing romantasy and new adult crossover fiction in school collections in recent years.
