About E.R. Frank

E. R. Frank was born in 1969 in Richmond, Virginia. She earned both an undergraduate degree and a master's degree in social work (MSW) from Vassar College before going on to practice as a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist. Her dual career as a mental health professional and a novelist has deeply shaped her fiction: Frank writes with clinical precision about the inner lives of young people navigating experiences of abuse, addiction, neglect, racial injustice, and sexual exploitation—often drawing on dynamics she has encountered in clinical work.

Her debut novel, Life Is Funny (2000), was published by DK Ink and told interlocking stories of eleven Brooklyn teenagers across seven years, each navigating very different family and social circumstances. The book was a Publishers Weekly Best Book and a Booklist Top 10 Youth Novel. Her second novel, America (2002), told the story of a mixed-race boy in foster care and residential treatment after a history of severe abuse; it won a Publishers Weekly Best Book and earned critical acclaim for its raw, compassionate portrayal. Her later novels Friction (2003) and Wrecked (2005) continued her examination of adolescent trauma, while Dime (2015) explored sex trafficking and coercive control through the lens of a teenage girl forced into prostitution.

Her Most Challenged Works

America and Dime have both faced challenges in school libraries and classrooms. America has been objected to for its frank depictions of child sexual abuse, drug use, and institutional violence. Dime has been challenged for its portrayal of sex trafficking, including explicit language and sexual content. Advocates for the books argue that Frank's clinical background ensures these difficult subjects are handled with accuracy and empathy rather than sensationalism, and that young readers who have lived through similar experiences deserve to see those realities reflected honestly in literature.
