Overview
Kody Keplinger's The Duff follows Bianca Piper, a high school senior with a sharp tongue, a small circle of close friends, and little patience for the social hierarchies around her. Her equilibrium is disrupted when Wesley Rush, the school's most notorious flirt, casually labels her the "Duff" of her friend group — the Designated Ugly Fat Friend who exists to make her prettier friends look better by comparison.
Insulted and unsettled by the label, Bianca finds herself pulled toward Wesley anyway, first through anger and then through an unplanned kiss that she can't quite dismiss. With her home life under strain, she uses their secretive, no-strings arrangement as a way to numb out rather than deal with what's actually bothering her.
What starts as a transactional distraction becomes more complicated as Bianca and Wesley keep talking, and keep noticing each other's problems aren't so different after all. The novel tracks her slow, reluctant realization that the boy she resented might understand her better than she expected — and that the label he gave her says more about insecurity than it does about her.
Behind the Story
Keplinger wrote much of The Duff while still a teenager herself, and the novel's frank, unglamorous take on adolescence set it apart from more polished coming-of-age romances. Rather than resolving Bianca's self-doubt through a makeover or a grand romantic gesture, the book roots her arc in ordinary teenage coping mechanisms — deflection, avoidance, and using another person as a distraction from problems at home.
The book's central term, "Duff," entered popular usage well beyond the novel itself, in part because it named a dynamic many readers recognized from their own friend groups: the reflexive habit of ranking people by looks and assigning roles within a social circle. Read alongside its 2015 film adaptation, the novel is often discussed less as a traditional romance and more as a study of how teenagers absorb and internalize the judgments of their peers — and what it costs them.
Critically, the book is frequently placed within a wave of early-2010s YA that pushed toward more candid depictions of teenage sexuality and emotional messiness, in contrast to more chaste genre conventions. That candor is central to both its popularity and the scrutiny it has drawn.
Why The Duff Has Been Challenged
Objections to The Duff center almost entirely on its treatment of teenage sexuality. Bianca and Wesley's relationship is physical from early on, and the novel does not shy away from depicting that intimacy or the emotional confusion that accompanies it, which has led some parents and school officials to argue the content is too explicit for the shelves it sits on. Related to this, the book's casual references to alcohol use among its teenage characters have also drawn criticism as inappropriate for a young-adult audience.
A separate line of objection concerns language, with the book's frequent profanity — including in its title's shorthand — cited as unsuitable for school libraries and classrooms. Some challengers have also taken issue with the frank, sometimes cynical voice Bianca uses to describe her peers, reading it as promoting a demeaning view of body image and social status rather than critiquing one.
Taken together, these concerns have made The Duff one of the more frequently challenged contemporary YA titles, with objections recorded in 9 states and 34 districts tracked in this catalog — nearly all rooted in the same underlying discomfort with a teenage protagonist's sexual agency and voice, rather than in any single incident or passage.
