About Forever...
Forever... is a novel by Judy Blume, first published in 1975 by Bradbury Press. Blume has said that she wrote it at the request of her teenage daughter, who wanted a book about two teenagers who have sex without either of them dying or getting pregnant as punishment — a book where sex between consenting teenagers was treated as a natural part of growing up rather than as transgression awaiting consequence. The novel Blume wrote delivered exactly that, and it has been controversial ever since.
Katherine Danziger and Michael Wagner meet at a New Year's Eve party during their senior year of high school, fall seriously in love, and eventually have sex — with condoms, after deliberation, and without catastrophe. The novel follows their relationship through the spring and into the summer, as Katherine begins to realize that the people you love at seventeen may not be the people you love forever, and as Michael learns what it feels like to be on the other side of that discovery. It is, in other words, a book about the genuine complexity of first love — its intensity, its sincerity, and its limits.
Blume is among the most important writers in American young adult literature. Her books — including Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, It's Not the End of the World, Blubber, and Tiger Eyes — have been read by tens of millions of readers over five decades and have consistently addressed the subjects that other books for young people avoided: puberty, sex, parental divorce, bullying, and death.
Legacy and Influence
Forever... arrived at a particular moment in American publishing and culture. The sexual revolution of the 1960s had not fully translated into literature for teenagers, which still largely operated on the premise that depicting adolescent sexuality led to it. Blume's refusal to pretend otherwise — her insistence that teenagers were already sexual beings who would be better served by honest information than by silence — was radical in 1975 and remains contested in some communities today.
The novel has sold millions of copies and has been continuously in print for fifty years. It was adapted as a Netflix series in 2024, bringing it to a new generation of readers. Blume received a lifetime achievement award at the 2023 Academy Awards, and in 2023 a documentary about her life and work aired to wide attention. She has spent decades as one of the most eloquent voices against censorship in American children's and young adult literature.
Why Forever... Has Been Banned
Forever... has been banned or challenged across 10 states in 55 school districts, and has appeared on the American Library Association's most-challenged list for decades. The challenges center on the novel's depiction of teenage sexual activity, which Blume portrays with accuracy: the awkwardness of first experiences, the responsible use of contraception, and the honest emotional aftermath of a relationship that ends. The book contains explicit scenes that have not become less explicit over fifty years.
Blume has argued consistently that the premise underlying challenges to Forever... — that depicting teenage sexuality causes it — is not supported by evidence and that the alternative of silence causes actual harm. Teenagers who have sex without good information have worse outcomes; teenagers who read about it in an honest, craft-serious novel written by someone who takes their experience seriously are better equipped to make good decisions. The book has been in circulation for fifty years, and American teenagers are neither more nor less sexually active than they were in 1975.
