About Sara Gruen

Sara Gruen is a Canadian-American author born in 1969 in Vancouver, British Columbia. She spent much of her career writing novels that combine meticulous historical research with compelling human drama. She is perhaps best known for Water for Elephants (2006), a novel set primarily in the 1930s during the Great Depression inside a traveling circus. The book became a major bestseller and was adapted into a 2011 film starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson.

Gruen studied English at Carleton University in Ottawa before pursuing a career as a technical writer. Her turn toward fiction came with her debut novel Riding Lessons (2004), a story centered on horses and family drama that established her interest in animals and their relationship to human lives. She followed it with Flying Changes (2005) before achieving breakout success with Water for Elephants.

The circus novel is narrated by Jacob Jankowski, an elderly man looking back on a tumultuous summer spent working with a Depression-era circus after dropping out of veterinary school. The story features violence, sexual content, and portrayals of alcoholism and animal cruelty, themes that have led to its challenge in school settings. Parent groups and administrators have objected to the book's explicit content when it appears on school reading lists.

Gruen went on to write Ape House (2010), which drew on her interest in great ape cognition and language research, and At the Water's Edge (2015), a World War II-era story set in Scotland involving the Loch Ness monster legends. Her work consistently blends real historical and scientific contexts with accessible storytelling aimed at a broad popular audience.

Water for Elephants has appeared on banned and challenged book lists in multiple school districts across the United States. Challenges have typically cited sexual content and language as the primary reasons for seeking its removal from school libraries and curricula.
