Years after the events that defined their childhood, Christopher and Cathy have built what looks, from the outside, like an ordinary life: a house, a marriage kept hidden from the world, and three children they are determined to raise without the shadows that shaped their own upbringing. Jory is poised and gifted; Bart, the younger son, is restless and given to elaborate private fantasies; a baby girl completes the household.

That fragile normalcy is disturbed when an elderly woman and her taciturn butler take up residence in the house next door. Watching the family from behind her curtains, she fixes her attention on Bart, drawing him into her home with small kindnesses and asking him to think of her as family. What begins as an old woman's odd fondness for a lonely child slowly becomes something more consuming, as Bart's visits leave him increasingly withdrawn from his parents and prone to alarming behavior.

As Bart's transformation deepens, Christopher and Cathy are forced to confront the possibility that their new neighbor is not a stranger at all, but someone with intimate knowledge of the history they have spent years trying to outrun.
