Overview
Dara has spent eighteen years believing she understood her small family: just her and her mother, Mellie, close and self-contained. That certainty collapses when Dara finds a copy of her birth certificate and sees two names she doesn't recognize listed as her parents. One of them, under "father," turns out to be Mellie herself, who transitioned after Dara's birth mother died and raised Dara alone under a new name and a carefully guarded past.
Rather than stay and sort through the wreckage of that revelation in person, Dara takes off on a road trip with her closest friend Sam, chasing down the extended family she never knew existed. Along the way, Mellie fills in the missing pieces through a series of emails, releasing her own story in fragments as Dara is ready to receive them.
The novel moves between the open road and the slower work of emotional reckoning, following Dara as she reconciles the mother she thought she knew with the fuller, more complicated person Mellie turns out to be. An author's note and additional resources follow the story itself.
Identity, Inheritance, and What Family Means
Verdi's novel sits at the intersection of two coming-of-age stories happening at once: Dara's and, in retrospect, Mellie's. The book is less interested in transition as spectacle than in its aftershocks years later — how a parent's past selectively withheld from a child reshapes that child's sense of her own origins once it surfaces. Dara's search for biological relatives becomes a search for a stable narrative of herself, and the novel treats that need as legitimate even as it asks whether genealogy is really what defines family.
The epistolary device of Mellie's emails is notable structurally: it lets a transgender character narrate her own history in her own words, at her own pace, rather than having that history explained or interpreted by someone else. This positions the book within a broader wave of contemporary YA that centers transgender parents and family secrecy, pairing a road-trip structure familiar to the genre with subject matter that was still relatively uncommon in mainstream young adult publishing at the time of its release.
Why And She Was Has Been Challenged
A recurring complaint lodged against the novel is that it is inappropriate for a school library because its central plot turns on a parent's gender transition, with objectors arguing that the topic itself is unsuitable for the age group regardless of how the story handles it. Some challenges have framed the book as promoting a particular viewpoint on gender identity rather than depicting one family's experience, and have asked that it be removed from collections on those grounds rather than simply flagged or restricted by age.
Other objections have focused more narrowly on passages discussing Mellie's transition and the physical and social realities that accompanied it, arguing that these details go further than parents expect from a book shelved for teen readers. In some cases, the challenge has been bundled with broader concerns about LGBTQ+ representation in school libraries generally, with this title named as one example among several. In total, the book has been challenged in 3 states and 3 districts tracked in this catalog, with most objections centered on its portrayal of a transgender parent rather than on any other element of the story.
