Overview
In the small town of Five Fingers, Michigan, two families have spent a hundred years refusing to speak to each other, and nobody left alive seems entirely sure why. June O'Donnell has absorbed the feud as inheritance rather than choice: Angerts are enemies, full stop, and that was true before she was born and will stay true after. Her late father made sure of it.
The trouble starts when Saul Angert comes back to town after a long, unexplained absence, and June finds that avoiding him is harder than hating him ought to be. What begins as reluctant attraction turns into something neither of them can easily walk away from, especially once the strange occurrences tied to both families' histories start intruding on the present.
As June and Saul grow closer, the town's half-buried stories, odd hauntings, and old grievances start surfacing in ways that force June to reconsider the version of her father, and her family, that she grew up believing in.
Roots, Inheritance, and Letting Go
Henry builds the novel around the idea that grief and resentment can be handed down like property, whether or not the people receiving them ever agreed to the terms. June's loyalty to her father is genuine and unexamined; the book's real work is in making her examine it, piece by piece, as the founding myth of the O'Donnell-Angert feud turns out to be far stranger and sadder than the tall tales suggested.
The magical-realist elements, ghosts, coywolves, and a curse rooted in a shared cherry tree, function less as fantasy set dressing than as a way of making inherited trauma literal. Coming after Henry's debut, the novel continues her interest in grief processed through the lens of speculative device, while narrowing its focus to a single town and a single, generations-deep rupture between two households.
Why A Million Junes Has Been Challenged
Much of the pushback on this title has centered on where it belongs on the shelf rather than on the book as a whole, with some reviewers questioning whether its romantic content is suited to the younger end of the young-adult readership it's often placed among. The central objection concerns scenes depicting the teenage protagonists' sexual relationship, including a first sexual experience, which some parents and reviewers have argued is too explicit for the age group most likely to encounter the book in a school library. Additional concern has been raised over underage alcohol use depicted among the teenage characters. According to records maintained in this catalog, the book has drawn 2 challenges at the state level and 2 at the district level.
