About Plano ISD
Plano Independent School District is a large suburban school system based in Plano, Texas, in the southwestern corner of Collin County north of Dallas. Established in 1891, the district serves approximately 52,600 students across roughly 100 square miles, with campuses extending into portions of Dallas, Richardson, Allen, Murphy, and other nearby communities. Plano ISD is known for strong academic performance: in 2012, it led all Texas school districts in National Merit Semifinalists with 128 students, and its three senior high schools—Plano, Plano East, and Plano West—have repeatedly appeared in national rankings of top high schools.
The district uses an unusual educational structure in which students attend a “high school” in grades 9–10 and then a separate “senior high school” in grades 11–12. Plano East Senior High School has offered the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme since 1995. Plano ISD also operates one of only two Chinese bilingual programs in Texas, launched in 1991 to serve a growing population of non-native-speaking students.
Controversies Over Reading Material
Plano ISD has experienced its share of battles over books and texts. In November 2010, the district’s textbook review board moved to remove a humanities survey textbook containing classical artwork depicting nudity; the decision was reversed within days following public outcry. In 2005, Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly falsely claimed the district had banned red and green clothing; the district demanded a retraction and received one. More recently, Plano ISD has seen 64 titles restricted or removed from school libraries, part of the broader statewide effort to limit what students can read.
