Overview
Motor Mouth picks up the story of race-car driver Alexandra "Barney" Barnaby and her onetime rival turned partner, NASCAR driver Sam Hooker, as they trade the open track for an unplanned criminal investigation. When Barney becomes suspicious that a fellow competitor is rigging race outcomes, she and Hooker set out to gather proof, a decision that leads them to commandeer a NASCAR transport truck.
The truck turns out to be carrying far more than equipment: two race cars and a corpse, instantly transforming a snooping expedition into a potential case of grand theft auto and murder. From the heat of Miami to the speedways of Concord, North Carolina, the pair improvise their way through the fallout, trailed by Barney's enormous Saint Bernard, Beans, and aided by the eccentric, cigar-loving Felicia and Rosa.
Janet Evanovich builds the book around fast pacing, wisecracking dialogue, and an escalating series of close calls, characteristic of her work outside the long-running Stephanie Plum series.
A Lighter Lane in Evanovich's Catalog
As the second entry in Evanovich's NASCAR-themed series (following Metro Girl), Motor Mouth represents a deliberate departure from her bounty-hunter novels into a different flavor of commercial fiction, one built around motorsports culture, road-trip antics, and an unapologetically breezy tone. The racing backdrop gives Evanovich a fresh set of settings and stakes, but the underlying formula, an amateur sleuth stumbling into danger alongside a charming foil, remains consistent with the comic-mystery style that made her a bestselling author.
The novel sits squarely in the tradition of popular genre fiction written primarily to entertain: brisk chapters, broad humor, and romantic tension interwoven with crime-plot mechanics. Its critical reception reflects that intent, reviewers and readers have generally approached it as an easy, high-velocity diversion rather than literary fiction, and its appeal lies in momentum and humor rather than thematic depth. That same accessibility, however, is part of what has occasionally put it in the crosshairs of challenges aimed at commercial adult fiction found on library shelves.
Why Motor Mouth Has Been Challenged
Sexual content is the primary driver of complaints directed at Motor Mouth, consistent with objections raised against much of Evanovich's adult fiction when it appears in collections also used by younger readers. The romantic entanglement between Barney and Hooker, along with the book's casually frank dialogue and innuendo, has drawn concern from those who feel such material is inappropriate for shelves accessible to teens. Complaints have also pointed to the novel's profanity and its matter-of-fact treatment of crime, including theft and a murder investigation played largely for comic effect, arguing that the combination trivializes serious offenses. In the catalog tracked here, the book has been the subject of a challenge in one state and one school district.
