Overview
Lore Olympus: Volume Four continues Rachel Smythe's illustrated reimagining of the Persephone and Hades myth, collecting episodes 76 through 102 of the original webcomic. Under the strain of Olympus's relentless rumor mill, the two title characters agree to pump the brakes on their relationship and address their own tangled circumstances before going any further.
That resolve proves difficult to keep. Hades contends with a dismissive Zeus, an emotionally abusive Minthe, and the isolation that comes from trying to set healthier boundaries, including cutting off a self-destructive arrangement with Hera. Meanwhile Persephone is shut out by her peers because of her association with Hades, harassed by an overly persistent Apollo, and confronted by the returning god of war, Ares, whose history with her threatens to expose a past she has kept hidden.
Despite their efforts to keep their distance, circumstance and attraction keep drawing Persephone and Hades back together, closing the volume on the sense that their bond is not so easily paused.
Between Myth and Modern Relationship Drama
Smythe's series has built its following by translating Greek mythology into the visual language and pacing of contemporary webcomics, and this volume leans further into that hybrid identity. Rather than treating the gods as distant archetypes, the book renders them as characters navigating workplace gossip, toxic exes, unwanted suitors, and family dysfunction, giving the mythic source material an unmistakably present-day emotional register.
Much of the volume's tension comes from contrasting how its two leads handle pressure: Hades's attempt to name and exit an unhealthy pattern with Minthe sits alongside Persephone's struggle to be believed and respected by those around her. That pairing has been part of the broader critical conversation around the series, which has been praised for its color-driven visual storytelling and its willingness to depict controlling or coercive relationship dynamics rather than romanticize them outright, while also drawing scrutiny over how those same dynamics, and the intimacy between characters, are portrayed on the page.
Why Lore Olympus Has Been Challenged
This volume has been challenged or restricted in 1 state and 1 school district tracked in this catalog. Objections to the series generally center on its illustrated depictions of sexuality and physical intimacy between characters, which some reviewers consider too explicit for the shelves where graphic novels are typically placed. Challenges have also cited the book's handling of an emotionally and physically abusive relationship, as well as scenes involving unwanted romantic pursuit, arguing that the material's visual format makes these mature themes more difficult for schools and libraries to age-gate than equivalent content in prose fiction.
