Overview
Jill Whitaker has always been the person who fixes things. She can diagnose a stalled engine, patch up a friend's shaky romance, and smooth over whatever small crisis lands in front of her. So when her mother leaves home for good, communicating the decision through nothing more than a note stuck to the counter, Jill is left holding a secret she doesn't know how to hand to her father—and a truth she can barely accept herself.
The novel follows Jill through the disorienting months that follow, as the steady architecture of her life comes apart. Her closest friendship, with the easy, golden Sean Addison, has gone quiet and strange, leaving her without the one person she'd normally lean on. Into that vacuum moves Daniel, a new neighbor carrying visible and invisible injuries of his own, and Jill instinctively falls back into old habits, trying to repair someone else rather than sit with her own damage.
Set across a single sweltering Arizona summer, the story traces Jill's slow recognition that her impulse to mend other people's lives has become a way of avoiding her own. What begins as a novel about a broken family becomes, gradually, a novel about learning where repair is possible and where it isn't.
A Portrait of Repair and Its Limits
Johnson builds the book around a simple but resonant idea: that some people cope with chaos by controlling whatever is fixable around them. Jill's talent for repair—cars, friendships, other people's heartbreak—reads at first as competence, but the novel gradually reframes it as a defense mechanism, a way of directing attention outward so she never has to examine the fracture in her own home. That reframing gives the book its emotional throughline, distinguishing it from a more conventional summer romance.
The relationship with Daniel serves a similar double purpose. He is introduced as a project, someone whose visible scars invite the kind of fixing Jill is used to performing, but the story resists letting that dynamic stay one-sided. As his history comes into view, the book complicates the rescue narrative Jill has cast herself in, asking what it actually means to help someone versus simply needing to feel useful. Alongside the romance, the novel keeps its attention on the more difficult, less resolvable relationship at its center: Jill's strained bond with her father, and the impossible position of knowing more about her mother's departure than he does.
Why If I Fix You Has Been Challenged
If I Fix You has been challenged or restricted in 1 state and 1 school district tracked in this catalog. Objections to the novel have centered on its candid treatment of teenage sexuality and romantic relationships, along with its frank handling of family breakdown, including infidelity and parental abandonment. Some challenges have also cited the book's depiction of trauma and its physical and emotional aftermath, expressed through Daniel's backstory, as content unsuitable for younger readers. As with many contemporary young adult novels that pair romance with difficult family circumstances, the book has drawn scrutiny less for a single scene than for its overall frankness about the messiness of adolescence and the adult failures that shape it.
