Overview
Ice Kissed continues Amanda Hocking's Kanin Chronicles, following Bryn Aven as her career ambitions carry her beyond the Kanin court and into unfamiliar territory: the underwater-adjacent realm of the Skojare, a tribe of trolls she is only partly descended from. Sent to help shore up the Skojare's defenses against a shared enemy, Bryn finds herself navigating a society that is both her birthright and a mystery to her.
The assignment doubles as a personal reckoning. Working closely alongside her superior, Ridley Dresden, Bryn must balance professional duty with a growing personal entanglement, even as the investigation into the Skojare's troubles starts to expose fault lines running back to her own kingdom.
What begins as a protective mission turns into an excavation of buried history, one that forces Bryn to reconsider her loyalties and her sense of belonging in the world she thought she knew.
Identity, Inheritance, and Divided Loyalty
Where the first Kanin Chronicles novel established Bryn's determination to earn her place through service, Ice Kissed turns toward questions of inheritance and split identity. Bryn's mixed heritage, Kanin by upbringing and Skojare by blood, becomes more than backstory; it structures her entire experience of the new setting, as she is neither fully an outsider nor fully at home among the people she's meant to protect.
The novel also folds a workplace romance into its political intrigue, using the shifting dynamic between Bryn and Ridley to complicate the chain-of-command structure that has defined their relationship so far. Layered onto that is the series' recurring interest in institutional secrecy: the idea that a kingdom's stability can rest on withheld truths, and that uncovering them carries a cost for the people who do the uncovering. As a middle installment in a longer series, the book is as much about deepening its world and its central relationships as it is about resolving any single plot thread.
Why Ice Kissed Has Been Challenged
Objections to Ice Kissed center on its romantic and sexual content, consistent with broader challenges to young adult paranormal romance featuring adult or coming-of-age relationships between characters. Critics of the book have specifically raised concerns about depictions of a romantic and physical relationship developing between Bryn and a superior within her chain of command, arguing that the power dynamic and the intimacy involved make the material inappropriate for younger readers. As with many titles in the genre, the fantasy setting has not exempted the book from scrutiny over how it portrays sexuality and relationships between its characters. In this catalog, the title has been documented as challenged in 1 state and 1 school district.
