Overview
Halfway Perfect, co-written by Julie Cross and former Ford model Mark Perini, follows Eve, a onetime rising star in the modeling world who fled the industry after a night that shattered her trust in it. Now finding steadier ground through photography, she lands an internship that seems like the perfect next step—until she realizes it will put her back in front of the runways and photo shoots she swore off.
Opposite her is Alex, a down-to-earth guy from Nebraska navigating his own unfamiliar rise as a model, where the person he's supposed to be for cameras and handlers rarely matches who he actually is. When his agent stages a public relationship with an underage costar purely to generate buzz for both their careers, Alex goes along with it, not anticipating that his real feelings would end up pointed at Eve, the photographer documenting his manufactured image.
The novel traces how Eve and Alex's growing connection collides with the industry's demands, forcing both to weigh what they're willing to risk—professionally and personally—for something genuine.
Behind the Glossy Image
Written with an insider's perspective courtesy of Perini's own modeling background, the novel positions itself as a corrective to the polished surface of fashion media, using Eve and Alex's alternating vantage points—one behind the lens, one in front of it—to expose the machinery of image-making. Eve's arc in particular frames the industry as a source of genuine harm, something she survived rather than simply left, while Alex's storyline examines how young performers are coached to package themselves, sometimes at the expense of their own autonomy.
The fabricated relationship at the story's center functions as its central metaphor: authenticity versus performance, and the cost of blurring the two when a career depends on the blur. That tension between what is real and what is manufactured for an audience runs through both leads' arcs and situates the book within a broader body of YA fiction interested in the pressures placed on young people whose bodies and relationships become marketable content.
Why Halfway Perfect Has Been Challenged
A parent objection filed against the book argued that its depiction of a staged romance involving an underage character normalizes exploitative industry practices and exposes teen readers to sexual content they considered inappropriate for a school setting. The complaint focused less on the book's critical stance toward the modeling industry and more on specific scenes and relationship dynamics that reviewers felt crossed a line for the intended age group.
Beyond the romantic plotline, some challenges have pointed to the book's frank handling of trauma tied to Eve's departure from modeling, along with its broader treatment of sexuality among teenage characters, as material better suited to older readers or requiring parental discretion.
