Why Gutless Has Been Challenged
Some readers have found the book's unflinching look at one student's campaign of harassment against another too harsh for its intended audience, even as others see that honesty as the story's central strength. See more ↓

Overview
Brock Ripling has the tools to make varsity: quick feet, reliable hands, the instincts of a natural receiver. What he doesn't have is any appetite for contact, and in a sport built on collision, that reluctance is impossible to hide. When he's cut from the varsity roster, the loss costs him more than playing time — it costs him his closeness with Hunter Gates, the team's quarterback and, until recently, his friend.
Freed from the obligations of that friendship, Hunter turns increasingly hostile, and not only toward Brock. He starts targeting Richie Fang, a bookish, undersized classmate who has done nothing to invite the abuse. Brock watches it happen, aware that Richie is the kind of kid least equipped to defend himself and most likely to need someone else to.
The novel follows Brock as the harassment escalates past the point where silence is comfortable. He's younger and physically overmatched compared to Hunter, and intervening carries real social risk. Deuker uses the structure of a football season to frame a quieter, harder contest: whether Brock can act on behalf of someone else when it would be so much easier to look away.
Football, Fear, and the Cost of Standing By
Deuker, known for grounding sports fiction in the psychological pressures around the game rather than just its action, uses Brock's discomfort with physical contact as more than a football problem. It becomes a stand-in for a broader unwillingness to put himself at risk — first on the field, then in his relationships. The book is less interested in whether Brock makes a roster than in what happens to a person's sense of self when avoidance becomes a habit.
Hunter's turn toward cruelty, meanwhile, complicates any easy division between protagonist and antagonist. He's rendered as someone whose popularity and position have insulated him from consequence, and the story is candid about how bullying can flourish inside a team dynamic that prizes toughness and loyalty above almost everything else. Richie Fang's vulnerability, in turn, gives the novel its clearest stakes: he has no path to defending himself, which puts the burden of intervention squarely on bystanders like Brock. In this respect, the book sits alongside other adolescent fiction that treats bystander inaction not as a neutral default but as a choice with its own weight.
Why Gutless Has Been Challenged
Bullying and its depiction have driven the objections raised against this book, which has been challenged in 1 state and 1 district tracked in this catalog. Critics have pointed to the novel's portrayal of sustained, targeted harassment — including the language Hunter uses against Richie — as more upsetting than instructive, arguing that dwelling on the mechanics of cruelty risks normalizing it even when the narrative ultimately condemns it.
Some challenges have also cited the book's frank treatment of adolescent social hierarchies and physical intimidation as unsuitable for younger readers, on the grounds that scenes of one student tormenting another could be distressing without sufficient framing. Supporters of the book counter that its portrayal of bullying is precisely what gives the story its usefulness, offering readers a candid look at how harassment escalates and what it costs both the person targeted and those who witness it in silence.
