Why Buried Heart Has Been Challenged
A parent objection to this title took issue with its central cross-class romance and its uprising narrative, arguing the book promotes a viewpoint on social hierarchy rather than simply depicting one. See more ↓

Overview
Buried Heart closes out Kate Elliott's Court of Five trilogy, dropping Jessamy back into a kingdom on the edge of collapse. With the vengeful King Nikonos hunting her, Jes has one goal left: securing the throne for Kalliarkos, the Patron heir she loves, so that he might dismantle the system that has kept Commoners like her family subjugated for generations.
But proximity to power changes people. As Kal maneuvers toward the crown, his choices grow harder to reconcile with the boy Jes once trusted completely, and the compromises of rule begin to look uncomfortably like the abuses of the old order. Meanwhile, the Commoners around her, including her own family, are done waiting for a benevolent king to grant them justice.
Jes is left holding two loyalties that no longer fit together: the man she's loved since childhood, and the uprising that has been gathering for years without her. The novel pushes its heroine toward a choice she has spent two books avoiding, closing the series on the question of what she owes each side, and what she owes herself.
A Series About Inheritance and Its Costs
Across the Court of Five trilogy, Elliott has used the arena spectacle of the "Fives" competitions as a way into a larger story about caste, colonization, and who gets to inherit a kingdom's future. Buried Heart moves the series out of the competition ring entirely and into open political conflict, trading athletic tension for the more uncertain stakes of revolution and betrayal.
The book is notable for refusing a tidy resolution to its central romance. Rather than treating Jes and Kal's relationship as a reward waiting at the story's end, Elliott uses their fraying bond to dramatize how unequal social position corrodes even sincere affection. That choice places Buried Heart alongside other YA fantasy of its era that used genre trappings to interrogate inherited privilege, positioning it as a conclusion more interested in reckoning than in romance.
Why Buried Heart Has Been Challenged
A recorded objection to the novel centered on its depiction of a romantic relationship crossing rigid class and ethnic lines, with the complaint arguing that the book's sympathetic framing of the Commoner-Patron pairing amounted to pushing a particular social message on young readers rather than simply telling a story. Related concerns raised about the series have pointed to its violence, including scenes of political retaliation and armed uprising, and to its portrayal of an oppressive ruling class as a vehicle for real-world commentary on race and colonialism that some parents felt was inappropriate for the intended age group.
