Why Blood Sport Has Been Challenged
Most objections to this novel have less to do with its mystery plot than with its transgender protagonist, whom some parents and board members have argued shouldn't be centered in books aimed at younger readers. See more ↓

Overview
Jason doesn't believe his sister's death was an accident. When he comes across a photograph Becca hid away, he becomes convinced someone is responsible, and he sets out to find proof. His plan takes him into a boxing gym he suspects holds the answer, where he enrolls not just to train but to dig.
As a transgender teen who has spent much of his life defending himself, Jason finds that the instincts he's built for self-protection translate easily into the ring. What he doesn't expect is how quickly the gym's regulars pull him into their circle, or how good it feels to be trusted and included somewhere for the first time.
That welcome complicates his mission. Jason has to hold his grief and suspicion alongside a growing loyalty to people he's supposed to be investigating, and the tension between wanting answers and wanting to belong drives the story toward its resolution.
A Mystery Built Around Belonging
Written as a hi-lo title — high interest, lower reading level — Blood Sport is designed to pull in reluctant readers with a fast-moving plot while still giving them a protagonist whose inner life carries real weight. The boxing gym functions as more than a backdrop for clues; it's the first space where Jason feels fully seen, which sharpens the book's central question of what a person is willing to risk, or overlook, to keep that feeling.
Jason's transgender identity isn't incidental to the mystery plot; it shapes how he reads danger, trust, and belonging, and why the found family he stumbles into matters so much to him. The novel sits within a growing body of accessible fiction that pairs genre hooks — in this case, grief and a possible murder — with protagonists whose identities are rarely centered in books built for striving or reluctant readers.
Why Blood Sport Has Been Challenged
A number of the complaints lodged against this title have centered on the protagonist's identity itself, with objectors arguing that a transgender lead character introduces subject matter they consider inappropriate for the age group the book targets, regardless of how the identity functions within the plot. Some parents raising concerns at school board meetings have framed the issue as one of surprise or lack of warning, contending that books featuring transgender characters should carry some form of disclosure or be shelved separately from general collections. Other objections have folded this title into broader pushes to remove books with LGBTQ+ protagonists from school libraries on the grounds that such representation amounts to promoting a viewpoint rather than simply depicting a character. The novel's violence, including its central premise of a suspicious death and the physical intensity of boxing, has also been cited alongside identity-based concerns, though the latter has driven the bulk of the pushback. In total, the book has been challenged in 2 states and 2 districts tracked in this catalog.
