Overview
Ava Jae's debut novel is set on a desert world governed by a nonhuman aristocracy, where Kora has just become the first woman in generations to inherit rule over her territory. Her ascension is contested from the start: much of her population would rather see her more volatile twin brother take the crown, and unrest, assassination attempts, and a marriage alliance she never wanted all press in on her at once.
Eros, a soldier of mixed human and alien blood, has spent his life defending a rebel camp that both sides of the conflict despise him for belonging to. When Kora's forces destroy that camp and capture him, he's forced into a stark choice: serve as her bodyguard or be killed for a heritage that even he doesn't fully understand.
Thrown together, Kora and Eros are soon framed for an attack on her intended husband. Rather than run, they choose to face the ruling court directly, even though exposing what Eros is could get him publicly executed. Along the way, they stumble onto a scheme aimed at wiping out the human resistance entirely, and their survival comes to depend on whether they can trust each other enough to stop it.
Court Intrigue Refracted Through an Outsider's Eyes
Told from alternating perspectives, the novel uses its science-fiction setting to examine inherited power and the fear it provokes in those who feel shut out of it. Kora's struggle to legitimize her rule mirrors real anxieties about women assuming positions of authority, while Eros's status as a "half-blood" gives the book a vehicle for exploring prejudice rooted in ancestry rather than choice.
The pairing of a monarch and a captive-turned-protector also lets the story probe how power imbalances complicate trust and loyalty, questions that recur as the two central characters are pushed from adversaries into uneasy allies. As the opening volume of a longer series, the book lays groundwork—succession politics, a fractured underclass, a looming war—that later installments continue to develop.
Why Beyond the Red Has Been Challenged
A complaint brought against the book took issue with the arc in which Eros is coerced into guarding the woman who destroyed his home, arguing that framing a captor-captive relationship as a budding romance sends the wrong message to teen readers about consent and coercion. Related concerns raised the novel's battlefield violence—razed settlements, assassination plots, and a planned genocide—as too grim for the intended age group. Within the catalog's records, this title has drawn a challenge in one state and one school district.
