Why A Vow So Bold and Deadly Has Been Challenged

Some parents and reviewers have argued that the war violence and adult-leaning romance in this YA fantasy sequel outpace what's appropriate for the age group it's shelved with. See more ↓

A Fragile Peace, A Restless Throne

The third installment in Brigid Kemmerer's Cursebreakers series picks up in the aftermath of civil rupture. Emberfall has split into camps loyal to two different men who once shared a single fate, and the two-month cease-fire holding them apart is less a resolution than a held breath.

Across the border, Lia Mara faces a different kind of strain. Newly responsible for governing Syhl Shallow, she is discovering that inheriting a crown is easier than learning how to wield it, and that the political and personal alliance she built with Grey may not hold up under the weight of actual rule.

The novel moves between these two fronts, using the ticking clock of the truce to keep both storylines under pressure as loyalties, strategy, and doubt accumulate on all sides.

Leadership Without a Script

What distinguishes this entry from the earlier Cursebreakers books is its interest in the unglamorous work of ruling rather than the fight to attain power in the first place. Both Rhen and Grey are past the point of claiming a throne and now have to answer for what they do with one; Lia Mara's arc runs in parallel, tracking what it costs a young leader to govern people who did not choose her and allies who may not be entirely honest with her.

Kemmerer keeps the series' emotional throughline intact — trust as something built and broken in small increments — while widening the lens to statecraft, divided populations, and the compromises that come with holding territory rather than simply defending it. Fans of the series have generally read it as a bridge book, one that complicates the romance-driven stakes of its predecessors with more explicitly political consequences, setting up the series' eventual resolution.

Why A Vow So Bold and Deadly Has Been Challenged

Much of the friction around this title has less to do with whether it should be available at all and more to do with where it belongs on a shelf — whether a series marketed to teens should sit in a middle-grade or general YA section given how far its content leans into adult territory. The book's setting is an active civil conflict, and its pages include battle violence, injury, and the political brutality of a kingdom at war, content some reviewers consider too intense for younger readers in the intended age range. Alongside the war narrative, the series' romantic relationships include scenes and references that some parents view as too sexually charged for a YA audience, particularly for the younger end of that readership. Objectors have generally framed their concern as one of fit and placement — arguing the book is being marketed below the maturity level its content actually requires — rather than a call to remove the series outright. In the catalog tracked here, that concern has resulted in a challenge recorded in one state and one district.
