Overview

Five years after high school senior Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend Sal Singh, who then took his own life, the case is considered closed in the town of Fairview. Teenager Pip Fitz-Amobi, however, has never quite accepted the tidy version of events, partly because she remembers Sal as a gentle presence from her own childhood, not the person capable of the crime everyone believes he committed.

When Pip chooses the Andie Bell case as the subject of her senior capstone project, she intends only to question the thoroughness of the original police work. Her research quickly moves past academic skepticism, pulling her into interviews, old records, and a growing list of people in Fairview who had reasons to want Andie gone.

As Pip's project evolves into a genuine reinvestigation, the line between finishing a school assignment and chasing the truth begins to dissolve. The deeper she digs, the more it becomes clear that someone still living in Fairview would prefer the past stay buried, and that her curiosity has put her in real danger.

A Small Town, a Closed Case, and the Pull of True Crime

Holly Jackson's novel arrived amid a surge of popular interest in amateur sleuthing, true-crime podcasts, and cold-case documentaries, and it borrows the structure of that genre directly: Pip's project is presented as an evolving investigative record, complete with interview transcripts and reconstructed timelines. The device lets the book interrogate how communities settle on a narrative after tragedy, and how convenient it can be to accept the simplest explanation, especially when the accused is no longer alive to contest it.

The novel is also attentive to the mechanics of reputation in a small town, showing how a victim's popularity and an accused's background can shape which version of a story sticks. Sal's guilt was accepted quickly, in part because the alternative meant reckoning with harder truths about people still living in Fairview. Pip's investigation becomes less a matter of solving a puzzle than of dismantling a comfortable consensus, which is part of why the book resonated with readers and helped launch a bestselling series and television adaptation that carried its questions about memory, guilt, and small-town complicity into a wider audience.

Why A Good Girl's Guide to Murder Has Been Challenged

Pip's investigation leads her through the darker corners of Fairview's teenage social scene, and the novel does not shy away from depicting drug dealing, underage drinking, and the kind of casual cruelty and secrecy that can exist behind a small town's polished surface. As the story moves toward its resolution, it confronts readers with violence, a murder committed by a teenager, and a portrayal of Sal's death by suicide, along with related profanity that mirrors how contemporary teens actually speak. Objectors have pointed to these elements as too intense or too frank for the young adult readers who make up the book's primary audience, arguing that graphic violence and matter-of-fact treatment of drug use and suicide can be harmful without sufficient framing or caution. Others have raised concerns about language and sexual references included in the portrayal of teenage relationships. In the records tracked by this catalog, those objections have resulted in formal challenges in one state and two school districts.
