Overview
Set in the years just before and during the First World War, In Memoriam follows Henry Gaunt and Sidney Ellwood, two classmates at an English boarding school who share an unspoken attachment neither is willing to name. While their peers treat the war as a distant, even glamorous, rumor of heroism, Gaunt and Ellwood are consumed by feelings for each other that the conventions of their world won't let them voice.
When Gaunt's German heritage puts his family under suspicion at home, he enlists partly to prove his loyalty and partly to put distance between himself and Ellwood. Ellwood, unaware of the real reason for Gaunt's departure, follows him to the front soon after, and their school friends enlist in turn. The novel then shifts from the hothouse atmosphere of the classroom to the trenches, where the two young men are thrown back together under conditions neither anticipated.
From there, the story alternates between the intimacy of their relationship and the attrition of the war around them, as classmates are killed or maimed and the romantic notions that sent them to France collapse under sustained bombardment and loss.
A Debut Novel of War and Withheld Feeling
Alice Winn's first novel belongs to a long literary tradition of World War I fiction concerned with the gap between the war as it was imagined by those who hadn't yet seen it and the war as it was actually fought. What distinguishes In Memoriam within that tradition is its attention to the emotional repression demanded of its protagonists by both their class and their era: Gaunt and Ellwood's inability to speak plainly about their feelings for each other mirrors the broader silence surrounding trauma, grief, and fear that the war imposed on the young men who fought it.
The novel also engages with questions of belonging and suspicion through Gaunt's mixed English and German background, using his position to examine how national loyalty was policed on the home front even as soldiers of all backgrounds died together at the front. Reviewers have noted the book's command of both registers, the intimate and the historical, and its willingness to sit with the physical horror of trench warfare rather than soften it for the sake of its love story.
Why In Memoriam Has Been Challenged
Most objections to this title center less on the historical setting than on where it belongs on a shelf and who should be handed it, given that its central relationship is between two young men and is depicted with real physical and emotional intimacy. Some readers and parents have argued that scenes addressing sexuality, along with the novel's frank treatment of wartime violence, injury, and death, make it unsuitable for younger or more general-collection readers, and have pushed for its restriction or removal rather than its inclusion for older adolescent and adult audiences.
Underlying many of these objections is a broader discomfort with a mainstream war narrative built around a same-sex romance, rather than treating that romance as incidental to the plot. In the records tracked by this catalog, the book has drawn a formal challenge in one state and one school district, reflecting a narrow but notable instance of this kind of pushback rather than a widespread pattern.
