Overview
Linda grows up on the remains of a commune in rural Minnesota, raised by parents who have long since drifted from whatever ideals once held the place together. At school she is watchful and apart, the kind of student teachers notice without quite reaching. When a new history teacher arrives and briefly pays her attention, the attachment she forms is cut short by his arrest, leaving her with questions about desire and judgment that the adults around her never help her answer.
That unresolved thread carries into the following summer, when a family with a young son settles across the lake and hires Linda to look after the boy. The arrangement offers her something like the belonging she has been missing, but it is shadowed by beliefs and decisions within the household that she is too young, and too eager to be needed, to question. Fridlund lets the novel's tension build through what Linda notices but does not fully understand.
Told from a distance in time, with an adult Linda looking back on that summer, the novel is less concerned with plot mechanics than with the slow accumulation of moments a girl misreads until she can't anymore. The consequences of that single season, the narrator makes clear, follow her for the rest of her life.
A Debut Shaped by Watching and Withholding
Fridlund's novel arrived as a widely praised first book, drawing comparisons for its spare, exacting prose and its refusal to soften an unsettling coming-of-age story into something reassuring. Much of its power comes from Linda's voice: guarded, precise, and often more attuned to atmosphere than to the danger actually building around her. That gap between what the narrator perceives and what the reader comes to suspect is the engine of the book, and it places History of Wolves alongside other literary fiction that uses an unreliable or incomplete adolescent narrator to explore complicity and neglect rather than naming them outright.
The commune backdrop matters too. It gives Linda a childhood already marked by adults who chose isolation and belief over convention, which primes her to accept the Gardners' household on its own terms rather than question it. Read this way, the novel is less a thriller about a specific crime than a study of how a young person raised without steady guardrails learns, or fails to learn, when to trust and when to intervene.
Why History of Wolves Has Been Challenged
A parent bringing this title before a district review committee has objected chiefly to the novel's frank handling of a teacher's arrest for child pornography and to a subplot involving a child's welfare within a household governed by unconventional religious belief, arguing that the material is too disturbing for the shelf it was found on regardless of the book's literary reputation. The complaint centers less on isolated language than on the overall effect of placing a teenage narrator so close to abuse, neglect, and the death of a child without the novel offering clear moral commentary to guide readers through it.
Additional concerns raised in these reviews point to the book's treatment of faith-based medical neglect and its comparatively frank depiction of an adolescent's emerging sexuality, both presented through a narrator too young and too isolated to fully process what she is witnessing. Defenders of the novel counter that this very ambiguity, the reader's growing unease as Linda's understanding lags behind the reader's own, is the point of the book rather than an endorsement of the harm it depicts.
