Overview
Beyond the Black Door follows Kamai, who shares her mother's rare gift: the ability to enter other people's souls while they sleep. Souls, in Strickland's imagined world, take the shape of the person who owns them—some tranquil and welcoming, others hostile and maze-like. In every soul Kamai visits, however, one thing repeats itself: a black door that does not belong there, warm to the touch and faintly pulsing, as if alive.
Kamai's mother has always forbidden her from opening it. That instruction holds until a personal tragedy upends Kamai's life and pushes her past the warning. What she finds on the other side sets in motion a mystery that reaches into the royal court itself, entangling Kamai in political maneuvering and a growing romantic entanglement even as the door's secret threatens to consume her.
The novel is built as a slow unraveling: each new soul Kamai enters supplies another fragment of a puzzle whose full shape only becomes clear near the end, when the stakes shift from personal to national.
A Fantasy of Interiority
Strickland uses the soulwalking premise to make literal a metaphor familiar to fantasy and gothic fiction alike—the self as a place that can be entered, mapped, and, dangerously, altered. The device lets the book move fluidly between intimate psychological territory and the external plotting of a court-intrigue thriller, using one to comment on the other. What Kamai finds inside other people's souls repeatedly forces her to reconsider what she believes about her own.
That interiority extends to Kamai's identity as an asexual character, which the book treats as integral to how she experiences attraction, intimacy, and the romantic relationship that develops alongside the central mystery, rather than as a subplot separate from the fantasy plot. This places the novel within a small but growing body of YA fantasy explicitly centering ace representation, alongside its more conventional genre pleasures of secrets, betrayal, and a kingdom-spanning threat.
Why Beyond the Black Door Has Been Challenged
This catalog tracks one state and one district where Beyond the Black Door has been formally challenged or restricted. Objections to the novel have centered on its sexual content and romantic material, which some challengers have deemed inappropriate for the young adult audience the book is marketed to. The book's frank treatment of asexuality as a sexual orientation has also drawn scrutiny from challengers objecting to LGBTQ+ themes in school and library collections more broadly, a pattern consistent with challenges brought against other queer-inclusive YA titles. As with many contested titles, objections have tended to focus on isolated passages rather than the novel's overall handling of identity, consent, and desire within its fantasy framework.
